Can you believe it is June and along with that comes planning for summer activities and potentially getting ready for a new schedule. Well, the activity around The Sophie House has been amazing and I feel like I have so much to share. We are certainly receiving an abundance of calls for help and support from lots of single women in the area. The needs are great and the opportunities are unfortunately limited but we are working hard at inspiring and encouraging these women to keep moving forward.
Many of our clients did not fall into their situations overnight, although some have, and so it takes some work to get back on track. I read an article in the RTD on Sunday, May 20th written by Supreme Court Justice William Mims and it spoke of justice and mercy. It resonated with me because that is a fine line we must all walk when we are offering support and assistance to those in need – a second chance and an opportunity to change things in their lives without enabling but by empowering.
The Sophie House offers so many ways for women to get back up such as budgeting and planning, savings opportunities, connections to credit repair and rebuilding, counseling and life coaching, child care during programs and events, housing referrals, and more! The mission and work that we do here are difficult but so inspiring and I am so glad to be a part of making a difference in lives of these women. I am so grateful for all the support that we receive and would love to talk to anyone looking to make a difference in their little part of the world!

“I am just trying to stay focused and get my family back on track. I thank you for your advice. It really made a difference in how I viewed things, you helped me put things into perspective. I also thank you for the prayers. They are always needed and appreciated”
Support The Sophie House
Thank You so much to those who made a donation in honor or memory of their mothers.
We had some great messages shared with us throughout the month. Messages of Hope and Encouragement.
“Thankful for (my mom) sharing with me her creative spirit and instilling in me the importance of helping others”… (volunteer)
“Ask for help. It’s okay to admit you can’t do it all by yourself. (Military mom)
This is only temporary- embrace the difficult times, they too shall pass. Don’t get so caught up in the negative, then you don’t see the blessings.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel! But don’t strain for it-this journey has a purpose. If you can be a single mom you can do ANYTHING. If you are in the middle of the tunnel and can’t see that light at the end, be your own light…you’ve got this.
Keep the inspiration going! Feel free to share on our website, Facebook, Instagram or on our Donation Page – we can send a certificate to someone you would like to honor.
“When I came here for help, it meant everything to me for somebody to help me
and talk through everything so I didn’t feel badly”
The Sophie House in the Community
The Sophie House 5K
The Sophie House 5K is June 2 at 8:30am! We are so appreciative of the partnership with Shady Grove UMC who is hosting a Community Wellness Expo during and after the 5K this year. We want to thank all of the sponsors who came together to make this happen too!
Holman Middle School TSA Group
The Holman Middle school TSA group, led by Mr. Sam Turner, made a beautiful bookshelf and toy box for our community center reception area. They went on to the state competition in which they did amazingly well! We also received a large donation of books so now when children or women come by, they are welcome to be blessed by a book or two of their choice. They can take books home to read and then share with someone else or bring it back and find another! We love our community!!
“I know what an impact a program like this can make, personally!”
We welcome your help for our future projects!
If you would like to be involved with the mission of The Sophie House, please complete a volunteer application or contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org, for ways to get involved.
We will be building shelves in the garage, cleaning up the yard, having events for clients at the community center, helping to organize or clean up clients homes, and more. We would love to connect with you.
If you are looking for a way to get involved, please fill out a volunteer application.
“I have been blessed by the Sophie House in many ways over the last three years. The kind and loving staff have been a great support system for me emotionally and financially”
Thank You to The Caring Clothes Closet, Lakeisha, and the many volunteers!
We want to thank The Caring Clothes Closet, Lakeisha, and the many volunteers for showing our clients and amazing evening of dinner, shopping, and best styling practices. The ladies were treated to a donated dinner, child care for their children, a personal styling session, and shopping at the clothes closet as they added to their wardrobe before Mother’s Day!
Then, the weekend after Mother’s Day, The Sophie House Community Center hosted the Heart of Cabi event and we had over 30 volunteers offering personal shopping to almost 70 women, from Safe Harbor, Hanover Safe Place, Chesterfield DV Center, Sacred Heart, The Sophie House, and more.
What a great community involvement day!
