The Sophie House News May 2016

The Sophie House Community Center

Welcome to the New Sophie House Community Center!  The Community Center will provide space for our offices, along with our food pantry and a counseling/meeting room.  We have a large room which will be used for classes and meetings such as couponing and nutrition, yoga, financial awareness, support groups, Bible study, cooking classes, one-on-one computer skills training, communication and relationship classes, and so much more!  The backyard is beautiful and will be used for upcoming functions like our mid-summer client party and backpack distribution! We will no longer have our clothes closet, however, Shady Grove UMC has the Caring Clothes Closet just up the street.  We will be partnering with them to continue this valuable ministry.  We are honored to continue our partnerships with Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Christ Church Episcopal, and Shady Grove UMC; these church partnerships are allowing us to make a significant impact on our clients and our community.  We are so grateful for their on-going prayers and support.  We are also looking at expanding our church coordination to include many more in the near future!

The location is  4771 Shady Grove Rd., Glen Allen, VA 23059.

Shoe Drive Starts Soon

The Sophie House will be having a shoe drive beginning June 1st and will run through the summer. Please hold onto any gently worn or outgrown shoes; women, men and children’s.  They should be in good condition.  Please, no holes or excessively worn soles. We will set out a box in front of the garage at the new community center (4771 Shady Grove Rd.) so you can start dropping shoes there. If you know of a student looking for a community service project or if your business or office group would like to help organize a collection, please contact Rebecca Blackwell here for flyers, to schedule a time to drop off/deliver, and we will showcase your efforts through Facebook and our website.
