Our Grand Opening

Thank You to our Community Supporters who were able to come by and celebrate the blessing of the New Community Center on Sunday, September 25th.  We had a large crowd come through to tour the new facility, many of which were new to the mission of The Sophie House.  We were blessed with food pantry donations as well as monetary donations.  Michael Tillem, our facilities manager, and some of his friends helped cook hamburgers, hot dogs, and chicken sandwiches and Cindy McKay helped to process the orders and transactions!  We had lots of children playing outside and Charita and Morgan inside helping with coloring and activities.  Kimberly Braine-Tillem, Founder and Executive Director and Rebecca Blackwell, Director of Operations and Programs, were able to talk to many of the attendees and answer questions about The Sophie House and we had lots of volunteers who were able to answer questions, serve desserts, and keep everything running smoothly for the afternoon.  We look forward to seeing many of you again volunteering and donating to help single women and their kids with the support they need to get back on their feet and keep moving forward!  And, Thank You to Ed Tepper for supplying us with some of the photography!

Panera Bread Pick Up

panera

If you’re looking for an after hours way to help out The Sophie House, then Panera Bread pick up is for you.  We are the recipients of Day End Doughnations, you will go to the Panera Catering location at 8800 Staples Mill Rd and pick up the boxes of leftover bread for the day.  The catering store is between T-Mobile and the Panera restaurant facing Staples Mill at Parham Rd.  Knock on the frosted glass door and let them know you are there to pick up for The Sophie House.  Arrive between 5:30 and 7:30.  Then, take the bread home and package it into gallon size zipper freezer bags and schedule a time to drop off at the community center.

Volunteers are a big part of what we do to help the community on a weekly basis – We are looking for help in the food pantry on Tuesday and Thursday from 10am-2pm.  Whether you can give an hour a month or a week, we would love to hear from you.  Other regular opportunities are Thursday evening bread pick up at Panera.  Occasional help is needed for child care while classes are being offered for mothers, computer skills and job search assistance, sending birthday cards to clients, hosting a food drive with your small group or workplace, facilitating a class for clients or the community, and more. Let’s see how you can be a part of The Sophie House!

Service Spotlight
& Special Thanks to Charita V.

Charita V. is  wonderful teen volunteer with The Sophie House. She has had such an amazing impact on the childrens events we have been able to host for our clients and the community.  Charita says she “loves helping out at The Sophie House” and she always has a smile on her face!  Charita and her Girl Scout Troop 782 have been integral in creating two events that have been duplicated and will be in our schedule for the future as well – the end of summer party and back pack event was a silver award she and others came up with to give those children with a need for school supplies, a fun end of summer celebration!  She plans to work on her Gold project which will be ‘teaching a class about nutrition to solve the problem of obesity by teaching the people in the class how to make quick, affordable healthy meals and where to find fresh fruits and vegetables which are easy to access’  We are so thankful for Charita and her dedication to The Sophie House and our mission!
