Celebrating Mother’s Day & The Sophie House Mission

As we enter into the month of May and celebrate Mother’s Day, and all the wonderful, strong and hardworking mothers, it is the perfect time to remember The Sophie House, it’s mission, and the mom’s that we support. These mothers come to The Sophie House with heavy hearts asking for help for themselves and their children. It is a hard thing for them to do, and The Sophie House tries to meet as many of their needs as possible while also providing a warm, caring, and safe environment. I am so honored to be a part of an organization that lifts women up when they find themselves, for whatever reason, in need of help.

Recently, I was reminded of why it is important to pay it forward and how important it is for us to care for those around us who need help. This past February, I lost my dear grandmother, Othell Pratt, at the age of 99. Reflecting on her life over the last few months, I have been reminded over and over again what an amazing and strong woman she was.

My younger sister, Rebekah McHoul, wrote in a tribute about her “Othell was a divorced woman in the 1950’s, raising two children alone with no support. She worked as a waitress at night making $1 an hour plus tips for most of her life. She never had much, but you wouldn’t have known it. She worked hard, loved her family and her God deeply. It would be a sad tale if you didn’t know Othell. She was a joyful, dignified woman, quick with a smile, and possessed a huge, tender heart.

What most amazed me was her total lack of bitterness. I stand in awe of the strength it took to triumph over the destitution and betrayal she suffered. This can be attributed to her faith. She both loved and trusted God. Her steadfast faith made a path for God to work in her life, helping her to rise above circumstance, cling to hope, and raise two good children. As a single parent, every day was Mother’s Day for her, but she set herself apart to God, relying on His promises. Although she faced trials and hardships, all who knew her would call her blessed…especially her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.”

As we celebrate Mother’s Day here at The Sophie House, we celebrate all the strong courageous moms out there working hard to provide for their families. We pray for you and for your continued strength.
