The Sophie House News July 2017

School is out and summer is finally here!

Please visit our new website to find out more about volunteer opportunities, community events, and exciting fundraisers. Whether you are looking to get involved in the everyday work we do, or participate in our fundraisers to help us raise money, summer is the perfect time to join us.

As the days get longer and the weather gets warmer, we encourage you to take a moment to pause and reflect on what is important to you. Whether that be volunteering in the community, connecting with family and friends, or meditating in personal reflection, summer fun means doing what is best for you. The mission of the Sophie House is to reach a helping hand to women in our community, allowing them to find what is best for them. Offering goal setting, financial planning and budgeting, case management and more, the Sophie House continues to work to extend a feeling of comfort and fun into the summer.

“I come here, I love to volunteer here and help out as much as I possibly can…

I get so much support when I come here” – Jane

Support The Sophie House

We are a small non-profit with many women coming to us daily for assistance.

They all have a need that they are looking to fill and we strive to assist with everything from financial assistance to auto repairs to food pantry visits to counseling and career planning.

The Sophie House relies on your generosity to be able to offer these services to the women in our community. Please consider donating on a monthly basis to help us reach our goal of being the leading provider of supportive services to single women and moms in the Greater Richmond area.

Service Spotlight & Rachel Alexander, #SophieVolunteer

Rachel Intern_The Sophie House

This summer, we will be welcoming a high school student intern, Rachel Alexander!

Rachel is a rising senior at Douglas Freeman High School. You can find her helping out in the Food Pantry, dashing around with a camera in hand taking pictures for our social media pages, or stationed at her desk logging in spreadsheets and updating files. She is excited to become involved in multiple areas of The Sophie House’s operations, and hopes to learn a lot along the way!

We are getting closer to Our Goal!

Shoes for The Sophie House Shoe Drive

Big shoes, little shoes, fashionable shoes, durable shoes, basketball shoes, ballet shoes…everything goes!

Throughout 2017, we are partnering with Funds2Orgs to collect gently worn shoes of all kinds – yes, even Crocs®.. Funds2Orgs sends these shoes to families in developing countries who then sell or repurpose them.

Your old footwear will extend miles into someone else’s’ life, allowing the opportunity for individual families and their communities to operate micro-businesses and take those vital steps towards self-sustainability. The Sophie House will receive a contribution from Funds2Orgs for the shoes we collect.

Be a part of our fundraiser by coordinating a shoe drive at your office, in your neighborhood, with your girl scout or boy scout troop, youth group or family and drop off any type or size of shoe. Kickoff September 15, extends through November 15. Help us reach our goal of 1000!

You can drop off your gently used shoes to the Community Center- 4771 Shady Grove Rd., Glen Allen, Virginia 23059
